Tata Steel’s FAMD Commissions 400 KLD Water Treatment Plant In Joda

Jamshedpur 22nd July 2021: In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability, Manganese Group of Mines, Bichakundi of Ferro Alloys & Manganese Division (FAMD), Tata Steel, has set up a 400 KLD (kiloliter per day) water treatment plant at Bichakundi under Joda block of Keonjhar district, Orissa.

The facility was inaugurated on 19th July 2021 by DB Sundar Ramam, Vice President (Raw Materials), Tata Steel, in the presence of Mr. Parvez Akhtar, Main Project Raw Materials, Mr. Mukesh Ranjan, Main Project OMQ, Mr. Siddhartha. Shah, Chief Human Resources Business Process (Raw Materials) and Chief Diversity Officer, senior company executives, and union office bearers.

Talking about sustainable mining practices, DB Sundar Ramam said: “This is yet another successful endeavor of ours towards environmental sustainability. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle the water requirement in and around our areas of operation. At Tata Steel, sustainable growth and development have always been an integral part of our business philosophy. All environmental and social considerations are taken into account for any project undertaken by Tata Steel.”

Built with state-of-the-art technology, the water treatment plant will treat 400 KLD of water from Suna River and meet the drinking water needs of around 2800 people living in Bichakundi, including company employees and the community in and around Bichakundi.

The water treatment plant will produce potable water that meets all the quality standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

With sustainability as the cornerstone of its operations, Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys and Manganese division has taken up rainwater harvesting ponds, plantation through the Miyawaki method and seed balls, mango orchards, rooftop rainwater harvesting, and development of an eco-friendly environment in the area. 

And many initiatives have been taken around that. 

The Restoration Park consists of a 130 kV solar power plant and a Polyhouse nursery. 

With more such innovations in the pipeline, FAMD continues its quest to remain the industry leader in sustainability by setting new benchmarks for a better tomorrow.
