Jamshedpur, 4th October-2016 : Despite traffic and transport department officials penalizing school pick-up vans for operating in contravention to the rules in the Motor Vehicles Act, several school auto-rickshaws and vans are continue to run overloaded.
"Drive to check erring school vehicles shall gain speed soon after the pujas as there is not enough police force right now," said district transport officer (DTO) Sanjay PM Kujur. Expressing disappointment on the lack of support from the school administration in identifying errant vehicles, Kujur said schools and parents should contribute in the drive. "We are working on a mechanism to encourage schools to run their own vehicles for ferrying children," said the DTO.
However, few parents feel irregular checking of vehicles will not deter rule offenders. "The best alternative before the district administration is to make schools agree to operate school buses," said RTE activist and Jamshedpur Abhivavak Sangh convenor Umesh Kumar.
